Creating an Author Website

by Jan King on August 26, 2012

Once the front cover is designed, it is time to begin work on the author’s website.  You can create a brand new site just for the book, or add special pages on the book to an existing business or personal site.

I recommend a WordPress site which you can actually do yourself or hire a web designer to do it for you.  I like to build the basic site myself (free software at wordpress.org to upload to your domain server site – like GoDaddy.com, Hostgator.com and many others), add page content and then have a web designer add a masthead and color, special fonts and other functionality.

The content that should be on the site or pages should include:

Home page

  • Description of the book
  • Social media icons
  • Mailing list sign up
  • Link to buy (you can use the Amazon link when it is available) or have ecommerce on your site.

Author bio and contact information

Book excerpt/table of contents

Blog, if you are going to regularly post to it

Media section to give journalists and others the info they need to do an interview or review of the book, including

  • 300 dots per inch author headshot JPG
  • 300 dots per inch front book cover JPG
  • links to any past reviews, media on the book
  • best testimonials from name-recognized individuals or organizations
  • list of upcoming author events

You can start working on compiling the content in draft form before you have the front cover complete if you have time while you are waiting for the editor and cover designer to finish their work. More when I introduce Susan to the web designer.
